It's snowing! It's snowing! The first flakes of the year
It's snowing! It's snowing! Soon winter will be here
It's snowing! It's snowing! It's covering the ground
I hope it snows and snows all night so school will be closed down

So light the lights (echo) and sing the songs (echo)
The holiday season is here
The air is cold (echo) but our hearts are warm (echo)
This wonderful time of the year

The cookies are baking, the air is smelling sweet
The first batch is cooling, soon there will be some to eat
The chimneys are breathing their smoke into the sky
As flakes fall down and pile up our hopes begin to rise

Dashing through the snow in a one horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go laughing all the way

Background: John got the idea for this song when he observed several of his family members enthusiastically observe that the first snowstorm of the year was underway. Colleen, Patrick and John's Mom all exclaimed loudly, "It's snowing!" when they looked out different windows and saw the white stuff coming down. John sat at the piano and made up this song. Colleen helped with the verse about the cookies. On the CD, the singers go into "Jingle Bells" after the second verse.

Movement Activity: Kids enjoy adding the motions below while singing. Feel free to make up your own movements and add illustrations.

It's snowing!:	Put both hands up in the air with fingers spread wide and bring hands down toward ground.
The first flakes	Hold up one finger.
Soon winter will be here:	Point to the ground in front of you.
Covering the ground:	With palms facing down, move hands in a circular motion to signify covering the ground.
Hope:	Put both hands above your left shoulder with palms down. Flex hands as though waving to each other.
School will be closed down:	Thrust arm up into the air while cheering “HOORAY!”
